How Ángeles Barberos scaled free haircuts across 15 provinces

← Back to the blog

Most charity haircut days are exactly that: a day. A shop opens its doors, cuts for free, and everyone goes home feeling good. The hard part is what happens the following month, and the month after that. Ángeles Barberos de España has spent five years solving that problem, and the answer is structure.

Five years, 6,000 people

The association was founded in 2020 and is based in Jaén, in the south of Spain. Its president is Chema Guerrero. In five years its members have given free haircuts and beard trims to more than 6,000 people in need or in vulnerable situations, across more than 100 actions and events throughout the country. Their own phrase for it is cortando con una sonrisa solidaria: cutting with a smile of solidarity.

The first success stories are already on record. People who came for a haircut and went on to return to work, or to find a home. A haircut does not do that on its own, but it is often the first step someone takes back towards being seen.

The chapter model

What makes Ángeles Barberos different is how it is organised. Almost 100 members are spread across 15 provincial chapters. Each community has a Capitán, whose job is to work with the local social institutions and keep the sessions periodic and sustainable. Not one big event a year. A regular presence, run by the people who live there, with the local shelter or day centre as a partner.

You will know them by the black leather waistcoat. It has become a recognised symbol of their presence wherever they set up.

This past Sunday, 13 September, the Jaén chapter announced a session at Centro Deporvida on Calle Maestra Concepción Sánchez Robles, run with Poblado Mundo: free haircuts and beard trims, no appointment, first come first served. Three days before World Barber Day, doing what they do every month anyway.

That is what a barber can be. Part of a network, turning up on a schedule, so that the help does not depend on someone remembering to organise it.

Ángeles Barberos de España represents Spain for World Barber Day. On September 16th, barbers everywhere use their skills as a force for good, each in their own way. Follow them at @angeles.barberos.esp, and if you run a shop, register it for World Barber Day.
